Bodrum

Bodrum is among the most popular coastal towns in the Turkish Aegean Region. Part of the Mugla province, the town lays on the southern coast of the Bodrum peninsula and faces the Greek island of Kos. It`s situated 270 km south of the largest city in the region Izmir and 180 km south of Kusadasi – the most popular Turkish resort. The town of Bodrum is recognizable by many yachtsmen which sail in to the port, by the white houses, that never exceed more than three stories in height. It`s known as the town where Turkey`s intellectuals, like singers, artists, poets and other men and women of art seek refuge from the big city`s noise.

Bodrum is an ancient town, dating back to the 7th century BC, when Greeks colonized this region. They gave the newly established town the name Halicarnassus. It was given considerable autonomy even after it fell under Persian rule thanks to its strategic location and the large harbor. Herodotus, father of ancient history, was born in Halicarnassus. Not only that but it was home to one of the seven wonders of the ancient world – the tomb of king Mausol – the Mausoleum. And during the crusades, the Knights Hospitallers based on the island of Rhodes were given permission to build their fortress near the ruins of the ancient town. In 1402 the Knights came in the region and started exploiting the remains of The Mausoleum as a quarry for building their castle. The fortress was given the name of St Peter, and the town that grew near it Petronium, whence the modern name Bodrum derives. The castle still stands on the coast, and after some renovation in the 60`s, it became home of the underwater archeological museum.

The Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and mild and sunny winters, attracts a lot of tourists. Bodrum, with its charming white houses, clear sea, beautiful beaches and first-class hotels can offer an unforgettable experience for tourists that want to see and learn something new. A part from the Mausoleum and fortress of St Peter, the town is situated close to the ancient city of Ephessus. A walk at Bodrum`s beautiful harbor will really thrill you and if you look back, outside of town, you can spot the ancient amphitheater of Halicarnassus. The atmosphere in the picturesque streets of the town is filled with a bizarre mix of old and new that have fascinated lots of wealthy Turks and westerners which now have a second home in the town.
